Feminist Theorist, Cultural Critic, and Writer
Bell Hooks is a distinguished feminist theorist, cultural critic, and writer. Growing up in Hopkinsville, Kentucky she was accustomed to learning and participating in things that uplifted her educationally. Hooks recalls the memories of attending an integrated school during her teens as “fearful” (p.15). However, young Hooks excelled anyway because she knew she would come home to a familiar setting within the black community. (p. 15) Much of Hooks work reflects her experiences, as a black women coming from working class background. As a result her writings correlate the connectedness of gender, race, and class because she feels they are determinants of how you are treated. Although her works most often specifically address concern of the plight of blacks in America, her focus on Gender, Race, and Class are areas which oppressed people all over the world can relate. Hooks unconventionally pulls from different disciplines when writing about a particular subject area. She examines the mental health or state of individuals, the role of socialization thorough media and fine arts, or teaching techniques that foster positive learning environments for “ALL”. Bell hooks has written over 30 books and articles which legitimize her status as a leading scholar on race, gender, and class. She is often criticized for her radical views by blacks, feminist, and pro-capitalist supporters. Bell Hooks currently resides in Tampa, Florida.
